Glacier Park
These notes are from several days ago but I'm still finding them interesting so maybe you will, too.By Glacier Park there was a sign that said "Helicop-tours". I like plays on words so this stuck in my mind.
People were rafting on the river even though the temperature was only 64 degrees. Brrrr.
The red sight-seeing buses with canvas roofs are back but the roofs were tightly closed this cool day.
Going-to-the-Sun Road has a length limit of 21 feet. Our RV is 24 feet long. We decided not to risk it.
Mariah's Pass was discovered in 1889. The railroad was built there in 1891. Highway 2 was not completed until 1930. In the meantime, automobiles were loaded onto flat cars where the railroad hauled them over the mountain. My conclusion: the for-profit companies will generally be more efficient than government projects.
We were coming to the end of one of those passing lanes when a guy behind us a ways decided he needed to be in front of us so he sped up. There was a vehicle approaching from the other direction. Suddenly we had three cars trying to use two lanes. It occurred to me that the guy in the wrong was NOT the one who was going to be run off the road!
We stopped at the lodge at Glacier Park East for lunch planning to eat in the Great Northern Restaurant. That only sort-of worked. The restaurant was closed so we ate in the lounge. The lounge had more business than it could handle. People had to wait for seats and for service. I wonder if they could have staffed the restaurant and served everyone?
We thought we'd spend the night at a rest stop offering free camping in Chester, Montana, but they were setting up for a farmer's market there and the chatter of the workers made us think this place would be too noisy for us. We weren't as bothered by Amtrak coming though while we were there but we would have been by the freight trains passing during the night.
So we moved on to a Core of Engineers free campground on Fresno Dam. We were to turn at the town of Fresno which turned out to just be Blackie's Tavern, a.k.a. Fresno Tavern. We are liking these free camping sites. They tend to be scenic places plus they help offset the cost of the more expensive campgrounds.
That's all the notes I have on this page.
TTYL,
Linda
