Another moving day

Yesterday we finally arrived in South Dakota.  You can always tell when you cross the boundary of a new state--there are signs listing regulations and a truck weigh station.  :)  The thing that puzzled us, though, was a flagman out in the middle of nowhere showing us a stop sign while motioning us to go who appeared to be cussing us out for not being able to understand what we were supposed to do.  Another sign that we had entered South Dakota was the stand selling fireworks--apparently, they are legal here.

We stopped at Perkins for lunch and had our usual orders there.  It's nice to have a usual when everything else is changing all the time.

Once in Sioux Falls, our new home place, we stopped at Alternative Resources to pick up our mail and get clarifications as to what all we needed to do to become official residents.  Driver's licenses first they said.

So we walked next door and got in just before a rush.  How lucky could we be?  Fill out one form, read the eye chart, smile for the camera, and walk out with the actual license!  I think I'm going to like being a South Dakota resident.

Next back to Alternative Resources to do voter registration.  Establishing residency requires spending one night in South Dakota--we plan to spend more.  So we filled out two forms and left them with the staff to finish filing for us.

Then on to vehicle registration.  This is where there was a line--a long line.  While waiting in that line we saw a sign that said for disability go directly to window 12.  Since I have handicapped parking status I went there while Dave waited in line in case window 12 wasn't right.  There was only one guy ahead of me at window 12 but he was registering several vehicles including at least one boat so it was awhile before I was sure they would help me at that window.  But, they did and, because we paid cash, they gave us our new license plates right then.  I really like becoming a South Dakota resident!  Especially since doing so will save us $600 per year on our motor home insurance.

So, we've officially moved into Yogi Bear Campground and they will send us our voter registration cards when they arrive.

Checks with our new address are due to arrive tomorrow and then we can leave anytime we are ready to do so.  But there's so much to see and do here in Sioux Falls we may stay and learn our way around this new home base.

TTYL,
Linda
