We're Home?
I am often at a loss nowadays when someone asks me, “Where's home?” We live in our RV. Our legal domicile is South Dakota. We're from Minnesota. Which answer is the right one for this question?
We are now in Minnesota. We'll be in the Twin Cities for about three weeks. During that time we'll see friends and family, get work done on our vehicle, operate model railroads, shop in familiar stores, try to get the post office to correct the error they made in our our address change, see our doctors, move stuff into and out of our storeroom, and whatever else we think of while we are here. This is familiar territory. But is it home?
We no longer own a house here. But, we miss this area. We are thinking we may come back for some extended time every summer. Where would we live during that time? And how would that feel?
We already have experience with living in a local park because we did that while preparing to sell the contents of our house. We know we could do it again but next time we would rent a car so we didn't have to pack up the RV every time we want to go somewhere. And our favorite park will only let us stay 14 days out of every 30 days so we'd have to move (or stay) elsewhere. So, this time we decided to check out other options.
For these three weeks we are checked in to an Extended Stay America motel. We have a studio apartment with a bed that doesn't have to be opened and closed every night and a table that doesn't have to be packed away at bedtime, and a desk that doesn't have to be cleared off at meal time. You can see what it's like at http://www.extendedstayamerica.com/. Is this better than living in our RV? Well, it's certainly more boring having the view never change and we still get to listen to neighbors who aren't always as quiet as we wish.
Would renting an apartment feel more like home? Well, it would certainly be more boring having the view never change and we would still get to listen to neighbors who weren't always as quiet as we wish. Would we rent the same one every visit? Or rent it full time so it was always there waiting for us to return? If we rented it full time, we could get rid of our store room since everything could go into the apartment. And then some—we'd have to buy new furniture since we sold all of ours.
Where is home?
TTYL,
Linda
