City Side
Dave and I both grew up in a city. We've lived in cities all our lives except for the few years the Army sent us to small towns. So, I am amazed at how quickly, once we hit the road, we stopped being used to cities. Traffic and distances that once would not have fazed us at all are now very irritating. But, we will continue to return to cities because our friends and families are there. We spent Friday afternoon and much of the evening with our daughter, Alexa, in the Chicago area. We got to see the house she lives in, the college she attends, the prairie garden she defends from an invading vine, and the vegetable garden from which she helps feed her housemates.
She also helped us shop. We went to Borders Books where we bought guides to Route 66 for a trip we plan to take. We went to REI where we stocked up on freeze dried food and Larabars. And we went to Beltone where I pressured a guy into selling me a badly needed hearing aid part when he just wanted to go home.
Alexa was very amused by me telling the audiologist to "Listen to me" when he tried to tell me I didn't need the part. This is my new phrase I now use regularly. See, I have one of those husbands who listens to what he thinks you are going to say rather than what you do say. I'm finding a lot of guys do that. So, when the audiologist was trying to hurry me out of there rather than quickly taking care of my need, I used the phrase on him. It worked. We would have taken less of the guy's time if he had listened in the first place.
But, I never did get my nap.
Then we headed out in an attempt to get to the other side of town where we planned to camp at Jellystone Park for the night. We didn't get there. We found ourselves driving on the tollway--through a construction zone--with narrow lanes--at night--in the rain. We decided it was time to try camping at Flying J.
We now know Flying J is only an emergency camp site for us. They make announcements over the loudspeaker all night. Fortunately for us, the rain was making enough noise to drown out most of the announcements. And also fortunately for us, they parked us in an RV area rather than a semi-truck parking area so we didn't have to listen to the semis run all night.
I was so tired, I grabbed a pillow and blanket and laid down on the couch at 9:30 p.m. without even changing to pajamas and immediately went to sleep. I did get up later and change but in all I slept 11 hours. I SAID I was tired.
TTYL,
Linda
one comment
I’ve used the Flying J RV lots with great success when trying to get from Point A to Point B with the least amount of fuss. I wouldn’t say their restaurant is a gourmet delight but having it right outside your front door counts for an awful lot when you want to sleep, eat, and go. Oh, yes, and they have an RV discount card that’s free.
