Day 5 Route 66
I woke up this morning humming "You and me and rain on the roof." Rainy days make it easy to stay in bed so it was 12:20 when we finally pulled out of camp.
Our route took us by The Tropics, again, from a different direction. I can't believe how hard we looked for it then only to have it keep showing up on its own now.
Then we headed out of town down Historic Route 66 where a short while later we drove by the glacial moraine rising above the prairie near Elkhart, IL. Unfortunately it just looks like a hill so by the time I realized that was it we were to close to it take any photos.
In Williamsville, Illinois, we stopped at the Route 66 Dream Car Museum which turned out to be closed Mondays but I did take pictures of cars in the parking lot.
Die Cast Auto Sales, also in Williamsville, looked like a place we would get lost for all time if we went inside (plus be a place that would have fun with my dust allergies) so we just stopped out front to take this picture. Don't we wish we could have bought gas there today at those prices?
In Springfield, Illinois, we checked out the Riverside Park Campground and decide it looked like a decent place to stay so we told the camp host we'd be back after doing some sightseeing.
First sightseeing stop in Springfield was Shea's Gas Station Museum. Another placed closed on Mondays! This is how we make such good time; not going into places where we would normally spend a hour or two.
Deciding we had waited long enough for lunch, we drove to the south end of Springfield to the Cozy Dog Drive In, home of Cozy Dogs. Cozy Dogs turned out to be two corn dogs placed in the same cardboard basket. Dave had onion rings with his and I had chili since that seemed to be the other specialty of the house. I'll undoubtedly pay for that tonight.
Heading back north on 6th street we found the Bel-Aire Manor with its Sputnick inspired sign.
And we drove by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum to scope out the parking situation. They have a surface lot reserved for buses and RVs. It was too close to closing time to go there today so that will be our first stop tomorrow.
So now we are tucked up in the Riverside Park Campground having paid $15 for a level site with water and electricity and we are listening to rain on the roof. Isn't this where we came in?
TTYL,
Linda
