Day 6 Route 66
Check out today was 11:00 a.m. We pulled out of our site at 11:02 and stopped at the office to buy Propane. The sign on the door said back at noon. Oh, well. We still have a third of a tank so we'll be OK a while longer.
We drove south out of Litchfield on Route 66 looking for the Sky View Drive In. We didn't find it so drove on to Mt Olive, Illinois, where we did find the Soulsby's Service Station after turning the wrong way first. My personalized maps leave something to be desired, I guess.
Our next stop was Henrys Rabbit Ranch in Staunton, Illinois. This place has all kinds of rabbits including VW Rabbits but my computer simply refused to upload that picture.
After that we stopped at the Decamp Junction Roadhouse in Staunton, Illinois. This historic tavern is supposed to have photos of the old dance hall that was there. The place wasn't open this early in their day but I swear I could hear swing music playing anyway.
We had lunch at Scottie's Route 66 Bar and Grill. Good down-home cooking. Popular with the locals. And a place that really hops on Friday and Saturday nights based on their advertisements for upcoming events. It would be fun to be here for their Halloween costume contest.
Then we visited the Mustang Corral. This place amused me with its play on words.
When we left the corral we guessed wrong on which way to turn and wound up at WalMart in Collinsville, Illinois. So we shopped. Then we studied our maps some more and figured out an alternate route to our next destination. A catsup bottle 170 feet tall built in 1949. This is a water tower at the former Brooks Catsup plant. That's our View in the foreground.
Finally we headed to Horseshoe Lake State Park hoping to stay the night there. But, there were no electrical hookups and Dave forgot we can run our computers off the RV's batteries so he chose not to stay there. I never thought I'd see the day when he'd choose an RV park over a state park but all this sightseeing is tiring so we don't always make the best decisions at the end of a day.
On our way to the next campground on our list, we discovered the Bel Air Drive In so decided to stop and take a picture of its sign. There is no longer a movie screen there. The Bel Air is in the process of becoming an industrial park.
Then we found the Luna Cafe with its wonderful sign. The people waiting for the bus out front probably wondered why we were taking their picture.
Finally we pulled into the MGM Lakeside Campground in Granite City, Illinois, where they put us in one of the two spots they had available. Actually they put us in both of them but the first one didn't have enough room for us to open our slide so they let us move to the more expensive one without charging us more money. Wasn't that nice of them? We are finding there are lots of nice people in the RV world.
TTYL,
Linda
