Dead Blog

MyBlogSite says  I talk too much and has cut me off. Rather than delete everything I've written so far, I'm moving to a different site. I'll post that URL here when I get it up and running.

Day 6 Route 66

Check out today was 11:00 a.m. We pulled out of our site at 11:02 and stopped at the office to buy Propane. The sign on the door said back at noon. Oh, well. We still have a third of a tank so we'll be OK a while longer.

We drove south out of Litchfield on Route 66 looking for the Sky View Drive In. We didn't find it so drove on to Mt Olive, Illinois, where we did find the Soulsby's Service Station after turning the wrong way first. My personalized maps leave something to be desired, I guess.

Our next stop was Henrys Rabbit Ranch in ... (more)

End of Detour

We spent three nights at Dad and Jean's. When we went there we didn't plan to stay that long but we had such a good time it was hard to leave. While there we talked about a lot of things including sharing, and correcting each other's, memories.

And we played games.  Dave and Jean don't much care to play games but they joined us in playing Mexican Train.  Then Dad taught me to play Sequence then Trumpet. Of course, he won all three of them.

And we ate. For lunch we had sandwiches and we ate their lunch meat and they ate ours so it felt like treats to all of us. For supper, Dad made meatloaf one night and a pork roast the other while we took them out to eat for the remaining one so, again, we all felt like we'd had treats. That's the best type of sharing food.

And we worked. We did the monthly maintenance on our RV and cleaned house and did laundry. That wasn't as much fun but it feels good to have it done. ... (more)

Detour on Route 66

Tuesday morning we dumped and filled even though it wasn't really time to do that because we know we won't be able to dump at my Dad's and I'm not sure I want to put their iron-filled water in our tank.

Then we went to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum. This is not a Route 66 site but I can't imagine being in Springfield, Illinois, and not going there. Dad warned me to plan on being there all day. We were there three hours before my body gave up and we didn't see everything. It was well worth the time and money we spent there, though.  I highly recommend it to anyone who is the least bit interested in that portion of our country's history.

Finally, we headed east on Highway 36 to my hometown. We got to Dad's about 5 p.m. and spent the next five hours catching up on family news and sharing memories. I am enjoying this visit.

I only made one note while at the Lincoln museum but I think it is a powerful quote. ... (more)

Day 5 Route 66

I woke up this morning humming "You and me and rain on the roof." Rainy days make it easy to stay in bed so it was 12:20 when we finally pulled out of camp.

Our route took us by The Tropics, again, from a different direction. I can't believe how hard we looked for it then only to have it keep showing up on its own now.

Then we drove by the Mill. You know, the other place we couldn't find the other day. Turns out I wrote the address down wrong so it really was right where it was supposed to be. Just two blocks from where we were while looking for it before. Huh!

A Day Off

We're exhausted by all this activity. Today we took a day off to stay parked and catch up on computer stuff. I also managed to work in two naps. We'll be back at it tomorrow as we head towards Springfield, IL, where we'll turn east towards Decatur. There's a lot on the way, though, so it will probably be Tuesday evening before we reach my Dad's. Does that match your date in the pool? Stay tuned for further developments.

Day 4 Route 66

We started day four's Route 66 events at their Hall of Fame and Museum in Pontiac, Illinois. Located in a former fire station, two engine bays are full of glass display cases that are, in turn, full of memorabilia. This is the kind of place you can spend hours looking at stuff. Or you can spend your time talking to the people there. I chose the latter and learned a lot about what has happened along the road and what to see along our way.

For instance, the story of patrolling Route 66 that's supposed to be housed in the State Patrol's old District 6 Headquarters isn't there. There might be something in the new headquarters but security is tight there and they didn't answer their non-emergency phone number so we didn't go there.

And the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum, while not related to Route 66, is not something a traveler should miss. So, I added it to our list of things to do in Springfield, Illinois. ... (more)
